Exploring the boundaries of music
The Midivial Punditz are pioneers in music, and have revolutionised the Indian music scene with their electronic fusion music. A desire to shake up the Bollywood and remix driven scenario prevalent in India pushed Gaurav and Tapan to set up their own Delhi studio. And their own brand of unique razor sharp tunes was born, that combined unlikely genres like electronica and classical, while using elements from various music styles around the world. They are now popular music producers working both independently and in Bollywood, with an international label to their name- the first Indian electronica artists with that feather in their cap.
They shattered the notion that only traditional music can be a success in India, and explored their passion to create a new sound to lead the way for electronic music and other genres. With a horde of loyal fans, a clear vision for the future, and the pride of having started a musical movement that is gaining momentum by the day, Gaurav and Tapan are Nat Geo Explorers.
Exploring the swell of the waves
Ishita Malaviya makes waves around the world, by riding them. After quitting a career in journalism, she sold her possessions to buy her first surfboard, and began her incredible journey towards being India's first professional female surfer. She co-founded and runs the Shaka Surf Club in Udupi, which ties up with local government schools to train children to be junior lifeguards and spreads awareness about the ocean. She also works with people of all ages, especially women, to introduce surfing to them as a sport, a way of life and a means of breaking free from the shackles of societal pressure.
She's practically single-handedly paving the way for a whole new generation of Indian surfers and people with an intense love for the ocean. A passion for sustainable living, a never-say-die attitude and a fierce desire to go against the tide are just a few more things that make Ishita stand out, and be a proud Nat Geo Explorer.
Exploring the myriad uses of technology
Arjun Venkatraman began his career as an engineer in Silicon Valley. While he had success and money, a greater job satisfaction eluded him, because he was convinced that he could do more, something that would serve a bigger purpose and make a difference. He had a dream of making technology more accessible to villagers. After some soul searching, he quit his job and shifted base to a small village in Karnataka where HackerGram was born - an initiative to connect India digitally. His idea helped transform televisions in rural homes into computers, successfully setting up an intranet in villages.
This then led to Swara, a platform for citizen journalism that enabled villagers to air their voices through technology that they were familiar with - SMS and calls. He has made a huge impact on the rural population by enabling them with the power of the internet, giving them a voice, and simply introducing them to the possibilities that exist beyond their imagination. He has no intention of stopping. Arjun Venkataraman is a Nat Geo Explorer.
Exploring the wonder of the world
From taking on the high peaks of China to navigating the challenging terrain of Kyrgyzstan, to cruising through the silky freeways of the US, Tushar has explored the world through his windscreen. His passion for travel led him to write his book -The Royal Affair- in which he narrates his various expeditions.
Sanjay sees the world 4x4, and considers it his way of life. His passion for travel has led him to understand off-road driving’s essential mechanics, and he now organises expeditions for off-roading enthusiasts across India. He even has the unlikely distinction of being the first person to drive a Tata Nano to Khardung La Pass - the highest motorable road in the word. Together, they drove past all records and took road trips to a whole new level when they decided that boundaries and milestones were nothing but pit stops. By driving through 50 countries and covering a staggering distance of 90,000 km, they showed that the spirit to constantly chase new frontiers and a curiosity about the world is the only push you need to explore it. They constantly inspire people to chase their dreams, and their next dream destination. Sanjay and Tushar are Nat Geo Explorers.
